F.A.B.B  Summer Up-Do

Summer is a time of warm weather , vacations and summer parties.  Most of us try to find time to relax but every weekend seems to be scheduled with a picnic, party or wedding.  The humid hot weather can cause havoc on delicate hair and result in frizzy unmanageable conditions which only add stress to already busy times. Throwing up your hands in frustration and wearing the same pony tail to your summer events?  Try this simple ultra chic retro up-do that will turn heads at any party.   These easy to follow instructions will have you out the door in a breeze.

Supplies Needed

• Large barrel curling iron
• Flat iron
• Bobby pins
• Hair tie

Suggested Products

• KMS Hot Spiral Spray- enhances curls and waves while protecting hair from thermal tools
• KMS Quick Finish Spray - a non-aerosol fine mist hair spray that protects with UV filter

1. Divide your hair into four sections. Start by parting hair in the center from the front of your hairline to the nape. Then make a section from ear to ear, secure each section with a hair tie or clip. This should make four equal sections.
2. Start in either back two sections with you large barrel curling iron and KMS Hot Spiral Curl Spray. Work in small horizontal rows no larger than the diameter of the curling iron, wrapping hair loosely around iron. Remember you want to create large “ beach style waves” with your iron not tight curls. If you are having difficulty with this try holding the iron and a section of hair, wrap the hair around the iron without opening the clamp, allow to set for a few sections and release. Continue to work up the entire back two sections of the head, when complete lightly spritz with hair spray.
3. Loosely tie back hair with an elastic this can either be centered or off to the side depending on the placement of the bun you would like.
4. The front two sections are to be styled with a flat iron. Start with ½ inch sub section at the bottom of the front section. Hold the section firmly half way down the strand and push towards the root until strand forms a S Pattern. Open and close flat iron gently from root to tip following the S pattern this will form a faux finger wave. Finish front two sections following the S pattern technique, spritz with a light hold spray when finished.
5. With the back section loosely wrap hair around the pony tail secure ends with bobby pin to form a bun. Pin any loose pieces to keep the bun shape but remember this is an informal natural looking bun.
6. Pull each front section back and secure ends underneath the bottom of the bun with bobby pin, finish hair with hair spray

Tips

• Remember this is meant to look like a loose effortless beach style , keep everything pinned softly
• Pre Spray each section of hair with KMS Hot spiral spray to prevent thermal damage , and secure a longer lasting hold for your style
• Bun can be moved to either side of the head to be viewed from the front.
• Partings can be off center to accommodate bangs

Franklyn Studio and Franklyn Men are fundraising to help support clean water in recognition of Earth Month.  All proceeds will be directly donated to Clean Ocean Action, an organization that focuses on improving water conditions on the New York/New Jersey coast.   What can you do to help?  By doing any of the following your name with be added into our earth month contest to win free retail for a year! This Thursday at Smiths Custom Framing Gallery Debbie Voight will be preparing for her role in Witt by shaving her head for charity. Debbie recently accepted the lead role in Wit , being performed at the Hershey Theater. Wit is a touching drama that chronicles the last days of a woman diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer. The audience travels through time as Vivian Bearing, the lead, experiences flash backs of important moments in her life.

Debbie an experienced thespian and former jazz singer chose Wit for its social impact, and thought provoking script. After taking on this project she decided to make it into a fundraising opportunity with proceeds going to Vickies Angel walk. This local charity works directly with families affected by cancer and 100% of their proceeds go directly to the cause.

When asked if she was nervous Debbie a performer since birth calmly replied no. She has been preparing for her role by memorizing over 50 pages of script and working on delivery of lines with a professor of poetry. As for the shaving of her head , preparation has included knit caps and some mental preparation. Debbie determine this was an integral part of playing the role of a cancer patient. She wanted to fully experience every aspect of this character and gauge personal and social reactions to this recognizable symptom of cancer. This role is extremely personal to Debbie with a family history of cancer, she draws on these experiences for inspiration. “ …..I learned from this play that sometimes things in life are out of your hands……cancer not only affects the patient but everyone around them.”

Second Day Hair

What’s second day hair you ask?  Only one of the hottest trends to walk down every runway this season, and splash across the pages of some of the most predominant fashion magazines.  This messy purposely undone hair has come and gone but always makes it’s return to the cheers of any women who can appreciate a little rock and roll and perhaps lethargic mornings.  This trend is not for the meek though, if you can’t leave your house with out pressing your hair  you may want to skip this one.  This style however hasn’t dominated this season , its a climate of anything goes from slicked backed chignons to loose braids.

So looking to achieve this look?  First determine your hair texture and try our recommended products below

• If your hair has a natural wave you’re in luck this is the best texture to achieve this style.  You can get this look by simply spritzing damp hair with KMS sea salt spray and allowing to air dry.  This spray adds fullness and a light matte finish.
• Straight hair requires a little effort to achieve an unkempt look.  While you hair is damp braid into a one or two braids depending on thickness.  Allow to dry over night and in the morning release braids and spray with KMS texture blast.  You can finish this look with a light hair spray like KMS Quick Finish Spray.  Adjust the amount of products by the lightest hold your hair requires remember this look is meant to be loose and workable.
• You can pump up your amount of natural wave or create wave by using a large barrel curling iron.  Mist large section of hair with KMS hot spiral spray and proceed to curl hair in spiral sections working bottom to top.  When finished work through hair with a large tooth comb to release curls and create large waves.  Finish with a light hold hair spray.

Franklyn studio is unveiling their new client reward program Star Points.  This unique program is geared towards rewarding you the client, for continued support and business.  This program does not require you to sign up and is kept through our extensive computer records  beginning January 1, 2010.  So how can you earn points?  Points are accrued by two things referral of new clients and purchasing of retail products.  Your specific account balance and any additional questions can be answered at the front desk.

Star Points Specifics

• Referral of a new client.  When you refer a new client they must give us your name, and then your account will be credited 20,000 points.
• Purchase of retail products.  When purchasing  retail on a a single visit (per transaction sale), you receive 1,ooo star points when spending over twenty
• Star points can be redeemed against any service, or any retail.  They do not have cash value nor can they be used for gratuity
• Every 1,000 star points are  equivalent to $1  , for example 20,000 points = $20

Congratulations Alyssa Fake our Hair resolution winner!

Franklyn Studio & Franklyn Men would like to formally announce the winner of our Hair resolution contest , Alyssa Fake.   In our January news letter we asked clients to submit their hair resolutions for 2010 and from that we selected a winner to help fulfill these goals.   Alyssa, a junior at Cedar cliff high school, is focused on improving the overall health of her hair in order to achieve the ultimate prom style.

” My New Years hair resolution is to have some long layers cut into my hair and a deep conditioning to have my hair healthy and shiny for my high school prom on May 15th at Cedar Crest High School..”

She will work with a provided KMS product , Silk Sheen Silk treatment , which conditions and moisturizes hair. This almond and Basil based conditioner provides the hair with a silky smooth finish.  On May 15th she will have her hair styled in a beautiful complimentary  updo to finish her dream prom look.  Congratulations Alyssa!

Recently a tragedy has struck the nation of Haiti , an earthquake has left this country in turmoil.  In an effort to send aid to Haiti we will be collecting the following items at Franklyn Studio.

• Topical antibiotic creams
• Protein bars
• Nutrition bars
• Peanut butter
• Toothbrushes
• Toothpaste
• Bar soap
• Gauze pads
• Bandages
• Tylenol
• Ibuprofen

All of these items will be collected for the next 2 weeks (apx) and then they will be delivered to Capital Area Christian Church.  CACC is preparing a truckload of these emergency supplies which they are sending to Haiti.  You can drop any of these items off at the front desk of Franklyn Studio.  Thank you for your support in our efforts.
